Imagine you had remote control of a video camera, located in the place you want to view. The controls allow you to spin it round through 360° and up and down by 180.
Everywhere in that place is now viewable. Also you can zoom in to look at details or go back out again to take in the wider view.
Clearly, you would not want this in real time: invasion of privacy, concern about tidiness etc. could be a problem. But if the scene was recorded digitally and projected inside a cube, you could virtually view it any time you want.
